Friday Flowers Club #45~Universal Whispers
Hello Friends.
The day after Father’s Day I went for a swim in our local reservoir with my friend. Bryony. We hadn’t been swimming together for a very long time, and it felt like a rekindling of an old flame.
As always, once the cold of the water had exacted its brief shock and awe, we chatted, we laughed, we bathed in the majesty of Redmires. Neither of us mentioned the significance of the day before, although a sense of loss hung lightly above us, and encircled the water in a gentle embrace.
Having both lost our fathers in recent memory, and having shared many a tear with each other in our communal grief, it went without saying that the preceding few days had worn a little heavy.
Twenty minutes later we sat drying off at the water’s edge in the sunshine, when as one we suddenly, urgently, saw fluttering, glinting, erratic beauty bursting through the air around us. Visitors from another realm, or so it seemed. At first we thought they were Butterflies, but their movements were frantic and direct.
Two dragonflies. One for each of us.
In Native American tradition Dragonflies are messengers and symbols of protection, sent by loved ones who have passed on.
In that moment, in the wonder of the spectacle around us, a deeper connection occurred and words were not needed. Whether messages from Dennis and Patrick, or simply a call to stay present; Dragonflies are agile flyers that appear and disappear in a flash. Their presence is a reminder to slow down, stop worrying about the future, to find a joy in the moment.
We dressed and walked bag to the car, an understanding between us. The universe had whispered, tenderly, and we had heard. I’ve been swimming nearly every day since that outing and not once seen another Dragonfly.
This week’s flowers are simply inspired by the beauty of summer and a reminder to find joy in the most fleeting of moments.
Have a lovely week everyone and as always, “Bringing the Outdoors In”.
